Overnight Care Durham

What Is Overnight Care at Home?

Overnight care is a form of home-based support in which a trained carer stays in the home through the night — typically from around 10pm to 7am — to provide monitoring, reassurance, and any personal care or assistance that may be needed during the night-time hours.

For many individuals and families, the night is the most anxious part of the day. Falls, disorientation, continence issues, breathing difficulties, and night-time confusion are just some of the concerns that can make the hours of darkness feel unsafe — for the individual at home, and for the family members lying awake worrying about them.

At Almond Flex Care, our overnight care service brings professional, compassionate support directly into the home — ensuring that someone trained and trusted is always present when it matters most. Whether your loved one needs occasional assistance or requires monitoring throughout the night, we have a solution that is right for your situation.

Our overnight carers are thoroughly briefed before their first night — understanding the individual's routines, health needs, preferred night-time support, and any specific risks or concerns that need to be monitored.

Your Options

Sleeping Night Care or Waking Night Care — Which Is Right?

We offer two types of overnight care, depending on the level of support needed. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right option for your loved one's situation.

Sleeping Night Care

What it is

The carer sleeps in a designated room in the home but is available to be woken if assistance is needed during the night. This option is ideal when night-time needs are infrequent — for example, occasional help getting to the bathroom, reassurance after a bad dream, or monitoring a condition that rarely causes night-time disturbances.

Best suited to

Individuals who are largely settled at night but who benefit from having a trained professional on hand — and whose family members need a full night's sleep without worry.

Waking Night Care

What it is

The carer remains awake and alert throughout the entire night — actively monitoring the individual, carrying out scheduled checks, and providing any personal care or support needed without delay. This option is for individuals whose night-time needs are frequent, complex, or unpredictable.

Best suited to

Those with dementia who experience night-time confusion or wandering; individuals with complex health conditions requiring monitoring; those at high risk of falls; or people who need continence care, medication support, or repositioning during the night.

“Not sure which option is right? Our care team will help you choose — simply get in touch and we will talk it through.”

Who We Support

Who Benefits from Overnight Care at Home?

Overnight care is for anyone whose night-time needs — or whose family's night-time anxiety — means that having a professional present through the night would make a meaningful difference to safety, wellbeing, and peace of mind.

Individuals at Risk of Night-time Falls

Those who regularly attempt to get up during the night and who are at significant risk of falling without safe assistance and monitoring.

People Living with Dementia

Individuals who experience night-time confusion, disorientation, or wandering — and who need calm, trained support to remain safe and settled through the night.

Those with Complex Health Conditions

Individuals managing conditions such as Parkinson's, COPD, heart failure, or epilepsy who require health monitoring or medical support during the night-time hours.

People Recovering from Surgery or Illness

Those who are convalescing at home following surgery, illness, or hospital discharge and who need close overnight monitoring during the early stages of recovery.

Family Carers Who Need to Sleep

Spouses, partners, or family members who currently provide night-time care themselves — and who are exhausted, at risk of burnout, or simply need a full, uninterrupted night's sleep.

Individuals Living Alone

People who live alone and whose families live at a distance — who need the reassurance of knowing a trained professional is present through the night, every night.
